Which multivitamin is best for me?

As a health care provider, I am often asked for multivitamins recommendations. My answer can be summed up in a few take away points. Here are 10 tips in choosing a good Multivitamin.

  1. Avoid any minerals linked to oxides, such as iron oxide, cupric oxide, and zinc oxide.

  2. Avoid the dl-form of Vitamin E

  3. Avoid calcium carbonate, and calcium citrate—look for Calcium ascorbate or other forms

  4. Avoid added sugars, sugar alcohols, NutraSweet, etc.

  5. Avoid supplements with propriety blends (fancy way of not telling you how much of each ingredient is present)

  6. Chose capsules vs tablets

  7. Pick ingredients that display the standardized amount, such as green tea catechins.

  8. Pick supplements that have shorter ingredient lists

  9. Pick multivitamins that exceed the RDA, but be cautious not to over consume Vitamins, A, D, E, and K.

  10. Do not purchase your multivitamins at large chain pharmacies, grocery stores, or warehouse stores—spend a little more on good quality

When it comes to purchasing supplements, you get what you pay for. Using cheap ingredients, with lots of fillers is a way to maximize profit, but the body will not absorb these nutrients any better. There is no vitamin or supplement that has 100% absorbability, no matter what the label says each dose contains. So, my advice is use the recommendations listed above, and turn your bottles over and look at the ingredients-you will be surprised at what is there.
